Achilles Tendinopathy

Achilles tendinopathy is a ‘overuse’ injury of the tendon joining your calf muscles to the bone in your heel. It occurs due to overuse or overloading of the tendon, and results in changes to the tendon structure which cause it to become weaker and painful.

Pain is experienced at the back of the heel, and into the Achilles tendon. It can cause stiffness when beginning activity, and pain with prolonged activity.

We can usually diagnose the condition in clinic, and develop a strategy for recovery at your first consult. Occasionally we may refer you for imaging to rule out other causes of your pain.

Treatment always includes exercises to strengthen the tendon, as tendons need targeted loading to be rehabilitated, and thus reduce the pain. In addition we may need to look at the activities you are undertaking and modify them if required, and your current footwear. A management plan will be developed by your Podiatrists at Berwick Podiatry, and we will ensure that it includes your goals for recovery.
